Unilink is continuing to enhance the services it operates across Southampton - by announcing an order for 32 brand new double decker buses.
The significant investment of around £7 million follows an announcement by the University of Southampton to renew its contract with Go-Ahead Group owned Bluestar - which runs the successful service on its behalf.
“Unilink has been a real success for the University,” said University of Southampton transport manager, Adam Tewkesbury. “And we are delighted that we will enter the next contract period with a fleet of new buses.
“They will offer additional comfort for every passenger travelling on our services - and they will also carry the latest Euro 6 low-emission engines, making them greener than ever.”
Andrew Wickham, managing director of Bluestar, added: “We know just how important it is to make sustainable transport a more attractive proposition, in order to entice people out of their cars - and this investment is a huge step in that direction.
“Reducing congestion and helping to improve air quality is a responsibility we all share."
The Alexander Dennis E400 MMC vehicles will sport a fresh new look and on-board technology - offering free WiFi, USB charging points for smartphones and hand-held devices, and contactless ticketing facilities.
Due to arrive in Southampton later this year, the new buses will run across the Unilink network.
